Nashville is Tennessee’s capital and a city on the economic move. It is
crossed by three major interstate highways that radiate north and south on
Interstate-65, east and west on Interstate-40, and northwest and southeast
on Interstate-24. Downtown and suburban developments offer clusters of
modern office buildings and economic and cultural life.
Nashville’s strong economy is based on commerce, industry, education,
government, and stable agricultural development. Nashville is governed by a
progressive metropolitan government. It is well known as a southern
educational center, often called the “Athens of the South.” It is the home
base of major national health care and insurance institutions, is a dominant
printing and publishing center, and is known worldwide for its music
industry. Significant steps in the area’s economic development are
emphasized by the Dell Computer Corporation Manufacturing plant, the General
Motors Saturn plant. Furthermore, Nissan recently selected nearby Franklin,
Tennessee as the location for its headquarters of its North American
Operations.
Nashville is additionally a well-known regional medical center with more
than 17 hospitals and two medical schools. Also a major center of the arts
in the mid-south, the city boasts The Tennessee Performing Arts Center where
the Nashville Symphony Orchestra, the Nashville Ballet Company, the
Tennessee Repertoire Theatre and other arts groups regularly present
professional performances. The city is also home to the 24,000 square foot
Frist Center for the Visual Arts. Nashville is the home of the NFL Tennessee
Titans, the NHL Nashville Predators, and the Pacific Coast League Nashville
Sounds (AAA) baseball team.
The population growth has also been steady. Luxurious, high-rise
condominiums are sprouting up throughout Nashville. The greater Metropolitan
area now has a population of more than one million people. Nashville is
centrally located. Fifty per cent of the entire country’s population resides
within a 600-mile radius. This is a major contributing factor to Nashville’s
economic development and its position as an important transportation and
distribution center.
