Michael L. Haynie is a Principal with Manier & Herod and a recognized leader in Tennessee workers’ compensation defense. With over 25 years of experience representing employers, insurers, and other business interests, Mr. Haynie has developed a practice focused on complex workers’ compensation matters and the evolving legal and regulatory issues affecting Tennessee employers and insurance carriers.
Mr. Haynie is regularly called upon by the business and legal communities for his experience and insight regarding Tennessee workers’ compensation law. He has played an active role in the development of workers’ compensation legislation before the Tennessee General Assembly, including drafting and advising on proposed legislation impacting Tennessee employers and insurers. He has also authored amicus briefs before the Tennessee Supreme Court on significant workers’ compensation issues on behalf of the business community.
In addition to his litigation practice, Mr. Haynie is actively engaged with the Tennessee Bureau of Workers’ Compensation, including matters involving administrative rules, regulatory developments, and the implementation of Tennessee’s workers’ compensation laws. His involvement in these areas gives him a unique perspective on the intersection of litigation, legislation, and regulatory policy affecting the Tennessee workers’ compensation system.
Mr. Haynie served as President of the Tennessee Defense Lawyers Association from 2023–2024 and remains actively involved in the organization and the broader Tennessee defense bar. He is also a member of the Tennessee Chamber of Commerce & Industry’s Legal Committee and Labor & Employment Committee. An active member of DRI, Mr. Haynie serves on the Steering Committee of its Workers’ Compensation Committee, contributing to the national workers’ compensation defense community.
Mr. Haynie is a frequent speaker at professional conferences and continuing legal education programs on Tennessee workers’ compensation law and related issues. He regularly presents to attorneys, claims professionals, employers, and other professionals in the workers’ compensation industry, including at the Workers’ Compensation Institute (WCI) Annual Conference.
In recognition of his contributions to Tennessee workers’ compensation law, Mr. Haynie was the inaugural recipient of the Tennessee Defense Lawyers Association’s Defense Lawyer of the Year Award. He was also a contributing editor of Manier & Herod’s Tennessee Workers’ Compensation: The Ultimate Guide, a resource addressing Tennessee workers’ compensation law and practice.
Mr. Haynie is admitted to practice in Tennessee and Florida and is a member of the American Bar Association, Tennessee Bar Association, Nashville Bar Association, Mid-South Workers’ Compensation Association, and DRI.
He earned his Bachelor of Arts, cum laude, from Auburn University and his Juris Doctor from Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
